Background of the Study
Mentorship has long been recognized as an important factor in fostering leadership development, especially for young women entering political arenas. In the context of Nigerian politics, where women face significant challenges such as gender discrimination, limited access to political networks, and a lack of institutional support, mentorship programs can serve as a crucial mechanism for building confidence, skills, and networks necessary for political engagement (Akinwale & Adedeji, 2023). In Zaria, Kaduna State, mentorship initiatives targeted at young women aim to empower them by providing guidance from seasoned female political leaders and activists. These programs focus on cultivating political knowledge, leadership qualities, and strategic thinking, which are essential for navigating the complexities of the political system (Dantani & Ahmed, 2024).
The political landscape in Nigeria remains largely male-dominated, with women frequently underrepresented in both elective and appointed positions. This disparity is often attributed to socio-cultural biases, economic constraints, and political party structures that favor male candidates (Emeka & Usman, 2023). Mentorship programs in Zaria, therefore, play a pivotal role in addressing these issues by providing young women with the tools needed to overcome barriers to political participation. Through mentorship, young women are introduced to political processes, offered career advice, and encouraged to pursue political offices (Lawal & Fadimu, 2024). These programs also enhance political networking and advocacy, contributing to a broader political awakening among young women in the region.
Despite the potential benefits, the effectiveness of mentorship programs in increasing political participation remains a subject of debate. Several studies highlight the need for more structured mentorship frameworks that connect young women with experienced mentors who can offer practical, real-world advice (Adeniyi & Haruna, 2023). In Zaria, however, the reach of such programs remains limited, and many young women are still unaware of or unable to access mentorship opportunities due to logistical, financial, and cultural constraints (Jibril & Sani, 2024). Therefore, this study seeks to assess the impact of mentorship programs on young women’s political engagement in Zaria, examining the strategies employed, challenges faced, and the overall effectiveness of these programs in empowering the next generation of female political leaders.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While mentorship programs are increasingly recognized as an important tool in fostering young women’s political engagement, there is a lack of empirical research on their effectiveness, particularly in the context of Zaria Local Government Area. Women’s political participation in Zaria is limited by various barriers, including gender biases, lack of financial resources, and inadequate access to political networks (Amina & Okechukwu, 2023). Although mentorship programs have been implemented to counter these challenges, their impact on increasing political participation among young women in the area remains underexplored. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing how mentorship programs in Zaria influence young women’s political engagement, the barriers to their effectiveness, and the strategies needed to enhance their impact.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will provide a comprehensive understanding of the role that mentorship programs play in fostering political engagement among young women in Zaria. By examining the effectiveness, strategies, and challenges of these programs, the study will inform policymakers, activists, and civil society organizations about the potential of mentorship as a tool for increasing women’s political participation in the region. The findings will also contribute to the academic literature on gender and political engagement, offering insights into the broader role of mentorship in overcoming gender disparities in political representation in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on mentorship programs in Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, specifically those targeting young women aspiring to engage in politics. Data will be collected through interviews with young women participants, mentors, and program coordinators. The study will be limited to mentorship programs in Zaria, and its findings may not be generalizable to other regions or demographic groups. Challenges such as the potential reluctance of participants to share sensitive information and limited access to certain mentorship programs may also affect the study's comprehensiveness.
